FALL: Renaissance

Class #1 (10/25) & Class #2 (11/1):

Illuminating the Renaissance


Flemish Manuscript Painting in Europe 1470-1550 Illuminated Manuscripts, the quintessential medieval art form, enjoyed a final flourish during the Renaissance - particularly in Flanders (part of modern-day Belgium and Northern France).

Students create their own extravagant and lavish manuscripts including colorful and luminous illustrations, gold and silver decorated initials and calligraphy to illuminate sonnets. Each manuscript features one main element of manuscript illumination from list of elements provided.

Class #3 (11/8):

(Final Manuscript Painting) OR Rembrandt, Lorraine, Rubens. Baroque Color Contrasts; charcoal and watercolor study of light and shadow. drapery still life, light source and shadow exercize with charcoal.

WINTER: Romantics & Impressionists

Class #4 (12/5): Goya. Ink / Expressive line. Scratchboard studies

Class #5 (12/13): Delacroix. Oil or Oil pastel landscapes: Romantic Art; horizon eye level and light source

Class #6 (3/7): Turner, Constable. Landscapes, cont'd:

Oil paint or oil pastel landscapes: Color theory.

Class #7 (3/22): Monet: Creating Impressionist texture in landscape painting. Brush techniques for texture and "What makes a powerful painting?

Class #8 (4/18): Degas, Van Gogh. Impressionism. Acrylic Painting cont'd : Creating Impressionist texture in landscape painting



SPRING: Russian & Islamic Art

Class #9 (5/9): Russia & Eastern Slavic Folk Art: painting Russian folk motifs, with distinctive use of red, green, white, blue. Creating original folk designs with mosaic tile.
