General

Oxygen First Aid For Scuba Diving Injuries or Oxygen Provider, represents entry level training designed to educate the general diving (and qualified non diving) public to better recognize possible dive related injuries and to provide emergency oxygen first aid while activating the local emergency medical services (EMS), and/or arranging for evacuation to the nearest available medical facility.

Course Objective

The objective of this course is to train and educate the general diving public in the techniques of using oxygen, as first aid for a suspected dive injury. In addition, this course will introduce novice divers to the fundamentals of dive injury signs and symptoms, response, and management. This program also provides an excellent opportunity for experienced divers and instructors to continue their education.

The DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course is not designed to train lay persons to provide oxygen to the general diving public. While the medical standards and equipment are the same regarding the emergency use of oxygen for both divers and non divers, the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course does not prepare individuals to respond to the ill or injured general public using emergency oxygen.

Qualifications of DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuriess

Since the first aid skills associated with providing emergency oxygen first aid deteriorate at variable rates, retraining is recommended every two years (twenty four months).

Successful completion of the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course results in awarding of a certificate and card recognizing the student's understanding and performance of the knowledge and skills contained within this program. DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries Certificates and Cards may be required to fill medical oxygen cylinders. National, regional, and local laws may vary. Contact the DAN Training Department in your region for more information about oxygen laws and regulations.

At no time may emergency oxygen first aid be used in lieu of evaluation and definitive care provided by a qualified healthcare professional. The use of oxygen is first aid - not treatment.

Continuing Education Credits

For diving leadership and medical personnel, this course is approved for various continuing education credits.

Specialty Course Designation

Instructors are encouraged to submit their credentials as a DAN Oxygen Instructor to their respective training agencies or associations and request authorization to offer a specialty course recognition along with the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries successful completion card and certificate. DAN Oxygen Training materials are copyrighted, however, DAN Training authorizes the DAN Oxygen Instructor to reproduce only those portions of the Instructor Manual necessary for approval of the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries Course Specialty. Omni Divers submitted their credentials as a DAN Oxygen Instructor to PADI and requested authorization to offer the PADI Oxygen First Aid specialty course. PADI approved their request. Therefore, we now offer both DAN and PADI certificaitons.

Prerequisites for the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries Course

The recommended minimum age for participation in this course is 12. DAN Training suggests that those with a junior diver certification participate in this course with his or her adult buddy. Some regions may have minimum age stipulations for the use of emergency oxygen. Instructors must verify state and local regulations prior to establishing age minimums for course participation.

Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from a nationally or internationally recognized association is recommended. However, all participants must perform all required skills contained in the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course to receive a certificate of successful completion of the course.

Recommended Minimum Hours of Training

Knowledge development (lecture) hours = 1
Skills development (practice) hours = 3

It is recommended that this course be taught as a four hour module as outlined in the manual. The time the course actually takes to teach varies depending upon many factors including the number of students and their ability to process the educational components of the program. Instructors desiring to include subjects or training beyond the course requirements may do so only before or following the course. Any additional training must not be required for completion of course requirements.
